NRI ALERT: Indian government extends deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar

On persistent demand from the Non-Resident Indians, the government of India on Friday announced yet another extension in the deadline for both residents and NRIs to link PAN (Permanent Account Number) with their Aadhaar card.

Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur took note of the demands in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic; the deadline has now been extended by another three months to September 30.

Previously, the government had set June 30 as the date by which resident and non-resident Indians had to get the cards linked.

A 10-character alphanumeric identifier, PAN is India’s Income Tax department’s unique ID number used to assess tax liabilities of individuals and entities who have income in the country.

Aadhaar is a 12-digit identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to all residents. It is mandatory for everyone in India.

The Indian government in Finance Bill 2021 has made a fine provision fine of Rs 1000 for not linking the cards within the stipulated period.

FOLLOWING IS THE PROCESS TO LINK PAN AND ADHAR:

  1. visit www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/home

  2. Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ under the Quick Links section

  3. Enter details such as PAN card, Aadhaar card, name

  4. Enter the captcha code

  5. Click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option at the bottom of the page, and your details are linked.
