Eight Indians in Qatar will not face death penalty

The eight former members of the Indian Navy, employed by Dahra Global in Doha, were initially handed the death sentence by Qatar’s Court of First Instance in October

Eight Indian nationals in Qatar have been spared from the death penalty, according to an announcement by India’s foreign ministry on December 28. The Court of Appeal in Qatar reduced the sentences for these individuals, who were arrested last year under allegations of espionage. The eight former members of the Indian Navy, employed by Dahra Global in Doha, were initially handed the death sentence by Qatar’s Court of First Instance in October.

While the specific charges against the individuals were not disclosed by Qatari authorities, India swiftly moved to appeal the death sentence last month. The Indian Embassy in Qatar, along with other officials and family members, was present during the Court of Appeal proceedings.

Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of the proceedings, the ministry refrained from making further comments at this juncture but affirmed its commitment to pursuing the matter with Qatari authorities

The foreign ministry emphasized its unwavering support for the accused from the onset of the case, pledging to provide continuous consular and legal assistance.

A detailed judgment on the case is awaited, and the foreign ministry remains in close communication with both the legal team and the families to determine the next course of action. Due to the confidential and sensitive nature of the proceedings, the ministry refrained from making further comments at this juncture but affirmed its commitment to pursuing the matter with Qatari authorities.
