Brutal heat wave persists in U.S. West as Oregon wildfire rages

A day after Death Valley, California, hit 54 Celsius, one of the highest temperatures ever recorded on Earth, record high temperatures have been forecast in many parts of the U.S.

Residents in the Klamath Falls area, in south-central Oregon, faced  mandatory evacuation orders as the Bootleg Fire burned through more than 153,000 acres in the Fremont-Winema National Forest.

After the Bootleg Fire in Oregon disrupted electric transmission lines, the agency that manages California’s power grid, the California Independent System Operator, issued a “flex alert” urging residents to conserve power between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. local time on Monday.

With about 23pc containment, the Beckwourth Complex Fire had grown to around 89,600 acres as of Monday morning, along California’s border with Nevada, according to the state’s fire incident reporting system

Federal authorities in Arizona on Monday were investigating the crash that killed both crew members of a small plane while surveying a wildfire in the northwestern part of the state. Meanwhile, according to officials, the fire has burned 734 acres and is 75% contained. Other states have also confronted fires as temperatures soared in many areas. With about 23% containment,  the Beckwourth Complex Fire had grown to around 89,600 acres as of Monday morning, along California’s border with Nevada, according to the state’s fire incident reporting system.
