A concerning surge in the deaths of Indian-origin students in the United States has prompted the Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS) to advocate for urgent action from various stakeholders. FIIDS, a prominent Indian diaspora organization, has highlighted the need for collaborative efforts from US government agencies, universities, and student associations to address this alarming trend, news agency PTI reported.

According to a report by PTI, FIIDS’ analysis has revealed a spectrum of causes behind these tragic incidents, including suspicious shootings and kidnappings, environmental fatalities due to safety oversights, mental health issues leading to suicides, and even suspicious accidents and violent crimes. In response, FIIDS has proposed a comprehensive set of measures aimed at enhancing safety education, improving search and rescue protocols, implementing stricter regulations against fraternity ragging, raising awareness about risks and safety precautions, and providing crucial mental health support.

Since the onset of 2024, there have been at least six reported deaths of Indian and Indian-origin students in the US, prompting widespread concern within both the Indo-American community and India itself. Dr. Lakshmi Thalanki, based in Boston, expressed alarm at the sudden increase in such fatalities and emphasized the need for prompt investigation and action.

FIIDS has also announced plans to conduct a survey among Indian-American students to gather insights into their concerns and safety needs, further emphasizing their commitment to addressing this pressing issue

FIIDS has submitted a series of recommendations to key US government departments, educational institutions, student organizations, and the Indo-American community, urging swift action to address the root causes of these tragic incidents. Amid circulating rumors within the Indian American community regarding potential hate crimes, particularly in regions such as Cleveland, Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana, FIIDS has emphasized the importance of thorough investigations to address any underlying concerns.

Despite the lack of conclusive evidence supporting the rumors, FIIDS acknowledges the necessity of addressing community apprehensions to ensure the safety and well-being of Indian-origin students studying in the US. Notably, Indian-origin students constitute a significant portion of foreign students in the US, contributing substantially to the economy through tuition fees and expenses. However, the recent uptick in student deaths poses a threat to their confidence in the safety of US universities and could potentially impact future enrollment.

Khanderao Kand, Chief of Policies and Strategy at FIIDS, underscored the importance of addressing these concerns promptly to safeguard the interests of Indian-origin students and maintain the reputation of US universities as safe and inclusive learning environments.

FIIDS has also announced plans to conduct a survey among Indian-American students to gather insights into their concerns and safety needs, further emphasizing their commitment to addressing this pressing issue.
