In a bid to resolve lingering issues surrounding the proposed Foreign Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the United Kingdom (UK), a delegation from India’s commerce ministry is set to embark on a crucial mission to the UK this week. The move comes as both sides strive to iron out outstanding matters that have impeded progress in the negotiations.

Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal announced on April 15 that the Indian team’s visit marks a continuation of discussions initiated during the 14th round of talks. “A team from India is going this week to the UK and some are already there. This is a continuation of the 14th round of talks,” Barthwal affirmed.

Highlighting the significance of these discussions, the ministry emphasized that substantial progress has been made, with the majority of contentious issues now on the path to resolution. However, key priority matters still require attention to ensure a balanced outcome for both parties involved.

As stakeholders await the outcome of these deliberations, the outcome of the upcoming talks between India and the UK could pave the way for enhanced cooperation and expanded trade opportunities between the two nations

The pending FTA between India and the UK has garnered considerable attention, given its potential to bolster bilateral trade and economic relations. With negotiations at a critical juncture, both sides are under pressure to address remaining disparities and clinch a mutually beneficial agreement.

Meanwhile, for the proposed FTA between India and the European Union (EU), prospects for progress remain on the horizon. The 8th round of talks is anticipated to convene in May or June 2024 in Brussels, signaling ongoing efforts to advance discussions on this front as well.

As stakeholders await the outcome of these deliberations, the outcome of the upcoming talks between India and the UK could pave the way for enhanced cooperation and expanded trade opportunities between the two nations.
