Yanmar’s Steak Cookoff competition evokes good response

The event was a testament to the global reach and appeal of the SCA, bringing together diverse cultures through a shared love of exceptional steak.

On Saturday (May 11, 2024) Yanmar Holdings Co. successfully hosted the Yanmar Steak Cook-Off, an event accredited by the Steak Cookoff Association (SCA), at the picturesque Yanmar Sunset Marina in Moriyama City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. This event marked a historic milestone as it was the first cash prize steak competition held in Japan, drawing in a competitive crowd and a passionate audience.

Competitors, both local and international, showcased their culinary prowess by grilling 1-pound ribeye steaks provided by the organizers. Each contestant brought their unique seasoning blends and grilling techniques to the table, aiming to impress the panel of certified judges with the color, taste, and texture of their steaks. The judging criteria were rigorous, with points awarded on a scale of 2 to 10 across five different aspects.

The atmosphere was electric as the participants cooked their steaks within the designated timeframe, each vying for the top spot. After much anticipation and meticulous scoring, the winner was announced, earning not only a cash prize but also a coveted spot in the World Championship of the SCA American Steak Contest set to take place in Texas in March 2025.

Founded in Texas in 2009, the SCA is a prominent sports cooking organization that sets standardized rules for steak competitions and conducts global outreach. The association is known for organizing barbecue contests judged by certified experts and for its educational initiatives, including the certification of barbecue instructors. With over 600 competitions in 18 countries, the SCA continues to promote the art of steak cooking worldwide

This event was more than just a cooking competition; it was a celebration of culinary artistry and cultural exchange. Yanmar Holdings, known for its contributions to food production and sustainable power solutions, seamlessly blended its corporate values with the thrill of competitive cooking. The company’s commitment to creating enriching and exciting experiences was evident as spectators enjoyed a day filled with delicious food and spirited competition.

Judging Criteria

Each contestant was provided with a 1-pound ribeye steak and tasked with seasoning and cooking it within a specified timeframe. The certified judges evaluated the steaks based on five criteria: appearance, texture, doneness, taste, and overall impression. Scores ranged from 2 to 10 points in each category, with the highest total points determining the winner.
