Australia introduces fingerprint, facial image checks for Indian visa applicants

New rules effective from 26 October apply to fresh applications, with eligible applicants able to submit biometrics digitally

Australia has expanded biometric requirements for visa applicants in India, requiring some applicants to provide fingerprints and a facial image as part of the application process from 26 October 2026.

The Australian High Commission in New Delhi said the change forms part of the country’s efforts to strengthen identity verification, prevent fraud and maintain the security of its immigration system. India is among nearly 60 countries covered by Australia’s biometric collection programme.

The new requirements apply to Australian visa applications lodged on or after 26 October. Applications submitted before that date and visas already granted will not be affected, according to the Australian government.

Applicants will receive official instructions

The Department of Home Affairs, which manages Australia’s immigration system, will notify applicants who need to provide biometric information and explain how to complete the process. Notifications are generally sent by email, either directly to applicants or through their authorised migration agents.

Depending on individual circumstances, applicants may be asked to visit an Australian Biometrics Collection Centre in person or use the Australian Immi App, where eligible.

Applicants who have previously provided biometrics at a collection centre and hold a valid passport may be eligible to submit their information through the app at no cost, the High Commission said. Applicants should wait for official instructions before booking an appointment or attempting to use the app.

Processing times expected to remain stable

Australian authorities said the additional requirement was not expected to adversely affect visa processing times, provided applicants complete the requested steps promptly.

The government also said biometric information would be collected, stored and managed in accordance with Australian legislation and applicable local laws, with safeguards for privacy and data protection

The expansion comes amid continuing travel, education and employment links between India and Australia. Indian nationals applying for visitor, student, work or other visas should check communications from the Department of Home Affairs to determine whether the requirement applies to their applications.

The High Commission also clarified that purchasing optional services offered by service providers would not influence visa processing times or the outcome of an application.
