In 2023, over 216,000 Indians renounced their citizenship, according to data presented by the government to the Rajya Sabha. Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, shared these figures in response to questions about the trend of citizenship renunciation over the past five years.

The data revealed that 225,620 Indians gave up their citizenship in 2022, 163,370 in 2021, 85,256 in 2020, and 144,017 in 2019. This indicates a significant fluctuation in the numbers over recent years.

The minister emphasized that a prosperous and influential diaspora is an asset to India, capable of contributing to the nation’s growth through the sharing of knowledge and expertise

AAP member Raghav Chadha raised queries regarding the reasons behind the high number of citizenship renunciations and the relatively low acceptance of Indian citizenship. He also inquired whether the government had investigated the financial and intellectual impact of these renunciations on the country.

Minister Singh responded that the reasons for renouncing or acquiring citizenship are personal. He highlighted the government’s recognition of the global workplace’s potential in the knowledge economy and noted efforts to engage with the Indian diaspora.

Singh emphasized that a prosperous and influential diaspora is an asset to India, capable of contributing to the nation’s growth through the sharing of knowledge and expertise.
