New York, August 13: Several US states have issued special proclamations recognising August 15, 2026, as ‘India Day’ or ‘India Independence Day’, marking India’s 80th Independence Day and acknowledging the contributions of the Indian-American community.

Delaware became the latest state to make the declaration, following similar proclamations by New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. The move highlights the cultural links between the two countries and the growing role of Indian Americans in communities across the US.

Delaware Governor Matthew Meyer signed the proclamation, noting the contribution of different cultures and traditions to the state. It specifically recognises the Indian-American community’s role in shaping Delaware’s social fabric and contributing through work, leadership and public service.

  • The proclamation also highlights India’s diverse languages, traditions, faiths and customs, which generations of Indian Americans have continued to preserve in the US

  • It calls on residents to mark India Day, recognise the achievements of Delaware’s Indian-American community and celebrate the enduring links between the people of India and the US

New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill issued similar proclamations a day earlier, declaring August 15 as India Independence Day in their respective states. Massachusetts has also recognised the occasion.

The state-level recognitions come as Indian-American communities prepare for celebrations across the US. Annual events include flag-hoisting ceremonies at the Indian Embassy in Washington, Indian consulates and India’s mission to the United Nations, along with parades, cultural programmes and community gatherings.

The declarations add a formal state-level recognition to this year’s celebrations, while underscoring the longstanding cultural and people-to-people ties between India and the United States.
