The attack on Sukhchain Singh has once again highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by NRIs in Punjab and the need for urgent measures to protect them
The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) has strongly condemned the recent attack on a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) in Amritsar, describing the incident as “deeply troubling.” The attack took place on Saturday in Daburji village, Amritsar, where Sukhchain Singh, who had recently returned from the United States, was shot by two assailants in front of his family. The incident has sparked concerns about the safety and security of NRIs in Punjab.
Sukhchain Singh, a resident of Daburji village, was attacked by two motorcycle-borne assailants outside his home. They initially inquired about the registration documents of his luxury car. Before he could react, the assailants brandished pistols, forced him inside his house, and fired three shots, striking Singh in the head and chest. Despite the severity of his injuries, Singh was quickly rushed to a private hospital, where he is currently reported to be out of danger.
As the investigation continues, the community is hopeful that swift action will be taken to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent such incidents in the future.
On Sunday, the police made significant progress in the investigation by arresting five individuals, including the father of Singh’s first wife, in connection with the attack. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the two gunmen who carried out the shooting.
Satnam Singh Chahal, the executive director of NAPA, expressed grave concern over the attack, stating that such violent acts not only harm individuals but also foster a climate of fear and insecurity within the diaspora community. He emphasized the significant contributions that the Punjabi diaspora makes to their home state, both financially and culturally, and underscored their right to feel safe and respected in Punjab.
Chahal called for a concerted effort from local authorities and community leaders to address the root causes of such violence and to improve law and order in the region. “The situation must be treated with utmost seriousness to prevent further incidents and restore confidence among the NRI community,” he stated. He also highlighted the importance of taking steps to ensure the safety and security of all residents and visitors in Punjab, which is crucial for rebuilding trust and creating a safer environment for everyone.
