In a significant reshuffling within the UK’s Conservative Party, former Home Secretary Priti Patel has been appointed as the shadow foreign secretary, timesofindia.indiatimes.com reported.

Patel, of Indian origin, will now serve under the new Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, who recently succeeded Rishi Sunak as Leader of the Opposition. This marks a renewed Conservative frontbench team as the party faces a challenging political landscape,

Patel, who had earlier contested for the party leadership, expressed her support for Badenoch in a social media post, urging Conservatives to rally behind the new leader. “Congratulations to Kemi Badenoch on her election as leader of our great Party,” she shared, emphasizing the need for unity and a fresh Conservative vision for the UK. Patel will now square off with Labour’s David Lammy, the current foreign secretary, in parliamentary debates, bringing her experience and perspective to foreign policy discussions.

  • Many senior members have declined frontbench positions, prompting her to assign multiple shadow roles to the remaining team

  • Badenoch, who represents North West Essex and has Nigerian heritage, stressed that her shadow cabinet reflects merit and diversity from across the Conservative Party, bringing together a broad range of experience

Badenoch’s new shadow cabinet appointments aim to unify the party after months of internal challenges. Alongside Patel, Robert Jenrick takes on the role of shadow justice secretary, and Mel Stride has been appointed shadow chancellor. Another prominent Indian-origin MP, Claire Coutinho, retains her position as shadow secretary of state for energy security and net zero, with an added responsibility as shadow equalities minister. Commenting on her reappointment, Coutinho stated, “This is one of the most important agendas for the country, affecting everything from energy bills to business success.”

“Our great party’s renewal has begun,” Badenoch declared, underlining her commitment to holding the Labour government accountable and reasserting Conservative values. As the Conservative Party works to regain public trust, Patel’s and Coutinho’s roles are expected to play crucial parts in shaping the opposition’s response to the current administration’s policies, particularly in foreign affairs and energy security.
