The latest changes strengthen oversight, ensuring academic and financial stability for international students while preserving the program’s integrity
Canada has implemented significant reforms to its International Student Program, aiming to enhance its sustainability and safeguard students from fraud and financial vulnerabilities, reported gujaratsamachar.com.
The new measures, announced by Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, include an increase in eligible working hours for international students to 24 hours per week.
The adjustments reflect Canada’s commitment to providing international students with valuable work opportunities alongside quality education, reinforcing its reputation as a preferred destination for global learners
“By fixing the off-campus work limit to 24 hours per week, we’re striking the right balance between providing work opportunities and helping students stay focused on their education,” said Miller. He emphasized the importance of collaboration from designated learning institutions (DLIs) in maintaining the program’s integrity, ensuring international students have a positive and successful experience in Canada.
These reforms align with Canada’s 2025–2027 Immigration Levels Plan, which seeks to reduce the temporary resident population while ensuring a robust framework for international students. DLIs, crucial to the program’s success, must now meet stricter compliance requirements. Institutions failing to submit compliance reports or verify acceptance letters may face suspension from admitting new international students for up to a year.
