India and Kuwait took a significant step toward enhancing their bilateral relations with the visit of Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait, to India on December 3-4, 2024.

This marked the first official visit of Al-Yahya as Foreign Minister of Kuwait, reflecting the deepening ties between the two nations.

During his visit, Al-Yahya held comprehensive bilateral talks with Dr. S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, in New Delhi on December 4. The discussions covered a wide range of topics, including political cooperation, trade, investment, energy, food security, and people-to-people connections. Both sides also exchanged perspectives on pressing regional and international issues of mutual concern.

The Indian community in Kuwait continues to play a pivotal role as a “living bridge,” strengthening cultural and people-to-people connections

A major highlight of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) at the Foreign Ministers’ level. The JCC aims to provide an institutional framework for fostering collaboration across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, education, technology, agriculture, security, and culture. It will also oversee existing Joint Working Groups in areas such as hydrocarbons, health, and consular affairs, while introducing new ones for emerging areas of mutual interest.

Foreign Minister Al-Yahya also met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who underscored the historical bonds shared by the two nations. Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude for Kuwait’s steadfast support for the welfare of the vibrant Indian expatriate community, which exceeds one million residents in the Gulf nation.

India and Kuwait have long enjoyed a relationship grounded in shared history and mutual respect. Regular high-level exchanges and robust economic ties reflect the strategic importance both nations attach to their partnership.
