Bhutan king’s official visit to india highlights expanding bilateral cooperation

As both nations look ahead, the visit underscored their shared resolve to strengthen bonds of friendship, enhance regional stability, and work collaboratively for mutual prosperity

The recent official visit of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan to India on December 5–6, 2024, marked another milestone in the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations. Accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck, the Bhutanese delegation included the Minister for Energy and Natural Resources,  Gem Tshering, and other senior officials.

During the visit, His Majesty held comprehensive discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, covering a wide spectrum of bilateral cooperation and global issues of mutual concern. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and other dignitaries also met with the King, underscoring the strong rapport between the two governments.

India and Bhutan share a unique partnership built on mutual trust and exceptional collaboration. The discussions highlighted the remarkable progress achieved since their last meeting in March 2024, emphasizing developments in trade, energy, education, infrastructure, digital connectivity, cultural exchange, and environmental conservation.

Key Highlights of the Visit

  1. Development Cooperation:

His Majesty expressed gratitude for India’s enhanced support under Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2024–29) and the Economic Stimulus Programme. The Indian government reiterated its commitment to Bhutan’s socio-economic growth, aligning with His Majesty’s vision for the Gelephu Mindfulness City Special Administrative Region. This initiative aims to foster economic prosperity in Bhutan and its border areas.

  1. Clean Energy Partnership:

Energy cooperation remains a cornerstone of India-Bhutan relations. The leaders reviewed progress in non-hydro renewable energy partnerships and reaffirmed the importance of hydropower projects. They celebrated the near-completion of the 1020 MW Punatsangchhu-II project and called for expediting the Punatsangchhu-I project.

  1. Boosting Connectivity:

The operationalization of the Integrated Check Post at Darranga, Assam, is set to boost tourism and economic activity in Bhutan and northeastern India. The leaders also noted advancements in cross-border rail links and digital connectivity, along with initiatives to strengthen bilateral trade.

  1. Space and Education:

Collaboration in the space sector has gained momentum, with successful implementation of joint action plans. The two sides also emphasized expanding educational cooperation, particularly in STEM disciplines, to empower the youth of Bhutan.
