Anand to leave politics and return to academia amid Liberal Party turmoil
Anita Anand, Indian-origin Transport Minister and former Defence Minister of Canada, has announced her decision to bow out of the race to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and not seek re-election to Parliament, reported gujaratsamachar.com.
“From Oakville to Ottawa: A Journey of Leadership and Service Ends”
Anand, a trailblazer in Canadian politics, shared her decision on X, stating her intention to return to academia after Trudeau’s resignation announcement. A tenured law professor before entering politics, she plans to resume her career in teaching, research, and public policy.
Balancing Legacy and Future Challenges
Anand, who joined Trudeau’s cabinet in 2019, played a pivotal role during the COVID-19 pandemic by securing medical supplies and vaccines for Canada. Her subsequent stints as Defence Minister, President of the Treasury Board, and Transport Minister showcased her leadership in tackling diverse challenges. Reflecting on her rapid rise in government, Anand highlighted milestones like addressing sexual assault in the armed forces, supporting Ukraine with military aid, and navigating Canada’s transport systems.
Born to Indian immigrant doctors, S.V. Anand from Tamil Nadu and Saroj Ram from Punjab, Anand shattered stereotypes to become the MP for Oakville, Ontario, in 2019. “During my first campaign, many doubted a woman of Indian descent could win in Oakville. Yet, the community rallied behind me twice, a memory I will cherish forever,” she said.
Liberal Party Leadership in Crisis
Trudeau’s announcement of his departure has left the Liberal Party in turmoil, with key leaders, including Anand, Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, and Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc, stepping back from the race to succeed him. With the opposition Conservative Party holding a 27% lead in polls, the Liberal Party faces a daunting electoral challenge.
The party’s internal election to choose Trudeau’s successor is set to conclude by March 9, just weeks before Parliament resumes. However, the threat of an immediate no-confidence vote could force earlier elections, compounding the Liberal Party’s challenges.
Potential Candidates for Leadership
Of the remaining contenders for Liberal leadership, notable figures include former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland and economist Mark Carney, the only individual to have served as governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England.
