12 Indians serving Russian Army die in Ukraine war, 16 missing: MEA

MEA confirms casualties and ongoing efforts for repatriation amid the Ukraine conflict

Twelve Indian nationals serving in the Russian Armed Forces have died, and 16 others remain missing, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported on Friday. MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal extended condolences and highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure the safe return of those affected, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

“The death of Binil Babu is extremely unfortunate. We have conveyed our condolences to the family. Our embassy is working with Russian authorities to expedite the return of his mortal remains to India,” Jaiswal said. He also noted that an Indian national receiving medical care in Moscow is expected to return home once recovered.

  • Among the 126 Indian nationals identified as serving in the Russian Armed Forces, 96 have been discharged and returned to India

  • Of the remaining, 12 deaths have been confirmed, and 16 individuals are classified as missing by Russian authorities

“We are actively pursuing the early release and repatriation of those who remain,” Jaiswal added.

Energy sanctions and Indian oil purchases

Addressing concerns over new sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector, Jaiswal clarified that India is in close coordination with US authorities to evaluate potential impacts. He emphasized, “Our oil purchases have been, and will continue to be, guided by our own energy security requirements and prevailing global circumstances.”
