A Bangladeshi national, Meher Sheikh, was arrested in Murshidabad on Friday for illegally residing in India using a fake passport and forged documents. Sheikh had been living in the Raninagar police station area for years under a false identity, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

The matter first came to light when a complaint was lodged at Bhawanipur police station on September 27, 2022. The case, registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Passport Act, was taken over by Lalbazar police for further investigation.

The case was uncovered following a 2022 complaint, leading to a widespread investigation and multiple arrests

During the probe, it was discovered that Sheikh had married a local woman and fraudulently listed his father-in-law as his biological father to secure voter identification. Acting on these findings, police raided his in-laws’ residence on Friday night and apprehended him.

Expanding investigation uncovers a larger racket

The probe extended across North 24 Parganas, East Burdwan, Murshidabad, and Hooghly, leading to multiple arrests. Among those detained was a former sub-inspector of Kolkata Police, indicating possible institutional involvement in the fake document racket. Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover further connections in the case.
