India’s growing global influence, particularly in trade and defence, was underscored during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Washington, marking his first engagement with US President Donald Trump in his second term.

Despite the diplomatic fanfare, the visit remained largely business-focused, emphasizing military sales, energy deals, and trade negotiations. These developments coincide with the latest World Citizenship Report Rankings, which measure global mobility, economic opportunity, and overall quality of citizenship. While India continues to carve out its place in global geopolitics, its standing in terms of citizenship attractiveness remains an area for improvement.

Underscoring the significance of the US election, the World Citizenship Report (WCR) 2024 called it the “biggest event” of the year since its outcome would influence policies and activities in various spheres.

The WCR, which introduces the key tool of the World Citizenship Index (WCI) revolutionizing the ranking of global citizenships, said the election’s result would shape how Washington DC’s military aid and foreign policy in Ukraine and the Middle East go from here. Both countries/regions are witnessing relentless conflicts and violence and could deteriorate into a worse situation in no time.

India’s Trade and Defence Strategy Amid Global Citizenship Trends

One of the key takeaways from Modi’s visit was the announcement of expanded US military sales to India from 2025, including the potential acquisition of F-35 jets. Additionally, increased oil and gas exports from the US aim to reduce India’s trade surplus with its largest trading partner. The leaders also committed to finalizing a trade deal by 2025, addressing market access and supply chain integration.

These economic and defence partnerships bolster India’s strategic positioning, but they also highlight the gap between its economic ambitions and its global citizenship ranking.

  • In the World Citizenship Index, India lags behind leading nations like Ireland (86.6), Switzerland (86.0), and Denmark (84.6)

  • Even regional competitors such as Singapore (77.5) and the United Arab Emirates (76.3) rank higher, emphasizing the need for India to enhance its international standing not just in economic terms but in areas such as mobility, quality of life, and global influence

Economic and Mobility Factors in Global Citizenship Rankings

India’s economic growth and strategic alliances are shaping its global identity, yet mobility restrictions remain a challenge. Countries with higher rankings in the World Citizenship Index enjoy strong passport power, allowing their citizens seamless access to global markets, education, and healthcare. Despite India’s economic clout, it faces significant visa restrictions, limiting opportunities for its citizens compared to European and North American counterparts.

For instance, Germany (82.7) and the Netherlands (82.5) rank high due to their economic stability, strong diplomatic relationships, and high standards of living. India’s partnerships with the US in trade and defence may improve its economic strength, but achieving a competitive ranking will require broader reforms in visa policies, residency rights, and domestic socio-economic development.

Tariffs, Trade Goals, and Global Competitiveness

A major concern emerging from Modi’s visit was Trump’s push for reciprocal tariffs, which could impact India’s export-driven industries. India has pre-emptively reduced average tariffs from 13% to 11% to counteract potential US measures. However, concerns remain over how non-tariff barriers, such as subsidies and procurement restrictions, could further complicate negotiations.

The commitment to double US-India trade to $500 billion by 2030 is ambitious but achievable if trade agreements foster mutual benefits. A more integrated economy can contribute to a stronger citizenship ranking by improving domestic prosperity, increasing job opportunities, and enhancing global mobility for Indian citizens.

 A Path Forward for India

While India’s global stature is rising through strategic trade and defence partnerships, the World Citizenship Index Rankings reveal areas for improvement. Countries that rank highest offer their citizens unparalleled mobility, economic security, and access to international markets. If India aims to climb the rankings, it must not only focus on economic expansion but also on reforms that enhance global mobility, reduce bureaucratic hurdles, and create an environment where citizenship offers greater international advantages.

As Modi navigates complex trade negotiations and geopolitical shifts, India has an opportunity to position itself as a top-tier global player. Strengthening economic ties with the US is a crucial step, but aligning domestic policies with global best practices will be essential in ensuring that Indian citizenship becomes as globally competitive as its economy.
