Tourist arrivals from India dropped by 25 per cent, with the Maha Kumbh cited as a possible reason
In February 2025, Nepal recorded over 96,000 tourist arrivals via air, but the number of Indian visitors decreased significantly compared to the same period last year, according to the Nepal Tourism Board, reported deccanherald.com.
A total of 96,880 tourists entered Nepal through the air route in February 2025, reflecting a slight drop from 97,426 visitors during the same month in 2024. Despite the decline, India remained the largest source of tourists, with 19,187 arrivals. This marks a 25 per cent decrease from the 25,578 Indian visitors recorded in February 2024.

The USA accounted for 10,348 tourists, while 8,232 visitors arrived from China. Other significant tourist arrivals included 5,057 from the UK, 4,874 from Bangladesh, 4,370 from Sri Lanka, and 3,737 from Australia.
According to Mani Lamichhane, director of the Nepal Tourism Board, the decline in Indian tourists may be attributed to the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, which has drawn millions of Indian pilgrims.
