Strategic dialogue in Tokyo strengthens bilateral cooperation in outer space, security, and industry collaboration
The Third India-Japan Space Dialogue took place in Tokyo on April 1, 2025, reinforcing the growing strategic partnership between the two nations in the realm of outer space.
The Indian delegation was co-led by Ms. Muanpuii Saiawi, Joint Secretary (Disarmament and International Security Affairs Division, MEA), and Mr. M. Ganesh Pillai, Scientific Secretary, ISRO.
Their Japanese counterparts were Mr. Saita Yukio, Assistant Minister and Ambassador in charge of Space Policy, and Mr. Kazeki Jun, Director General, National Space Policy Secretariat.
Space dialogue focuses on policies, security, and commercial partnerships
The meeting provided a crucial platform for both nations to exchange views on space policies, national programmes, and shared priorities. Key areas of discussion included space situational awareness, space security, Quad space cooperation, and commercial collaboration between industries.
Ahead of the formal dialogue, the Indian co-chairs visited JAXA’s Tsukuba Space Center on March 31, 2025, where they gained insights into Japan’s advanced space infrastructure and ongoing missions
The Space Dialogue was also preceded by an industry cooperation event jointly organised by IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center) and Japan’s Cabinet Office.
This event witnessed participation from prominent Indian and Japanese companies and industry associations, laying the groundwork for deeper industry-to-industry engagement and joint ventures in the commercial space sector.
With both nations recognizing the strategic and commercial importance of space, the dialogue is expected to boost bilateral initiatives, expand cooperation under the Quad framework, and encourage private sector participation in the growing Indo-Pacific space ecosystem.
