A 6-member team headed by National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Director is expected to reach Kerala on Friday to get a clearer picture of the Coronavirus situation in the state.

According to a Union Health Ministry release, the team intends to visit a few districts to gather first-hand information on actual facts and figures.

A tweet by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya says: “As a large number of Covid cases are still being reported in Kerala, the team will aid state’s ongoing efforts in Covid-19 management”.

For the third day in a row on Thursday, there are reports of over 22,000 coronavirus cases in the state, more than half of the country’s total COVID-19 cases in the past few days.

This had kicked up a heated exchange between the Centre and state’s ruling CPI(M). Union Ministers, including Rajeev Chandrasekhar and V Muraleedharan, have slammed the Pinarayi Vijayan govt for its “unscientific” relaxations during Eid and of “using the pandemic for political gains”.

“All experts in different states say that we have a very good defence mechanism. Seroprevalence study by ICMR shows that almost 42% of people have antibodies in them, indicating that our preventive mechanism is very good. More than 50% of the total population is still unaffected”, she adds.

“The upsurge now is mainly on account of the Delta variant, and we are doing our best”.

According to the minister, over 1.96 lakh tests were done on Wednesday and another 1.63 lakh tests on Thursday.
