Reddit post exposes harsh reality behind ‘glamorous’ NRI life

Indian expat sparks viral discussion after revealing the truth behind life abroad

An Indian expat’s brutally honest Reddit post has gone viral for exposing the often-overlooked struggles of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) living abroad. The post highlights the disconnect between perception and reality, sparking widespread debate on whether leaving India for a supposedly better life overseas is truly worth it, reported hindustantimes.com.

“I’m surviving on instant noodles, not living in a mansion,” says NRI in viral post.

“Every time I tell my friends back home I live abroad, they think I’m living in a mansion,” the Redditor shared. “Why does everyone back home assume that being an NRI means I’m rolling in money and living in some luxurious palace?” the post continued. “I’m just here in a tiny apartment, surviving on instant noodles and pretending I know what ‘adulting’ means.”

The user then asked others, “Do you guys get this too, or am I just the only one living the glamorous NRI life?”

Social media reactions: Relatable, raw, and brutally honest

The post struck a chord with thousands of readers, especially fellow NRIs, who rushed to share similar experiences. One user commented, “It’s not your fault, mate! We Indians like to brag and set unrealistic expectations in front of relatives and friends.” Another added, “Only other NRIs know the reality. Everyone else in India thinks ‘wah bhai, you’ve made it.’”

Others blamed earlier generations of NRIs and Indian pop culture for glamorizing the experience. “Indian movies show NRIs driving Ferraris, living in mansions, and dancing around tourist spots. That’s far from the reality,” one user remarked.
