Indian student’s death in China: Another foreign student taken into custody

Nansen was one of the few students who chose to stay back when the pandemic lockdown was declared.

Aman Nagsen, 20, from Gaya in the Indian state of Bihar, a business administration student at the Tianjin Foreign Studies University, was found dead in his hostel dormitory on July 29.

Authorities are investigating the student’s death, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.

The Foreign Ministry has said it was a case of homicide and that another foreign student had been taken into custody, but his identity had not been disclosed.

A ministry spokesperson said that on that particular day, around 8 pm, the police had received a phone call informing them about the body lying on the floor.

Later the next day (July 30), the authorities informed the Indian Embassy about the incident and said the case would be handled in accordance with the law. They have offered assistance to the Indian government in all further investigations.

An autopsy was done on Tuesday (Aug 3), and the issuance of a death certificate would take a few days, the authorities said.

Nansen was one of the few students who chose to stay back when the pandemic lockdown was declared.

As many as 23,000 students went back and are still stuck in India on account of China’s reluctance to lift visa restrictions.
