A woman from Deogarh tehsil of Rajsamand district Rajas has set the internet abuzz by giving a completely different meaning to the festival of ‘Rakhi’.

Leela Kanwar Narana was on her way to her brother’s place to tie him a ‘rakhi’ when she saw a crowd of people gathered up ahead.

Curious to know what was going on, she stopped for a closer look, pushing herself to the front for a closer look. And there in the centre of a partially enclosed area was leopard that somehow looked hurt and confused.

And then she did something that took everyone by surprise. She stepped forward, crouched down beside the big cat with a brave and calm composure, looking at the puzzled creature gently.

Then she took out a rakhi from a small purse she carried and lovingly tied it around the front paw of the injured animal. As she completed the sacred ritual she murmured gently in a soothing tone: “Now you are my brother”.

  • What was even more intriguing was the calm manner in which the leopard sat through this warmly endearing interaction and let the woman tie the rakhi

  • It looked as though it seemed to somehow understand the significance of this unprecedented binding

Noting that the three-year-old leopard was injured, she looked up into the faces of the bystanders and said: “Now that he has this sacred band, please do not harm him; protect him”.

Then she got up and disappeared into the crowd as suddenly as she had come. The touching scene has left the internet stunned with its extraordinary blend of absolute fearlessness and genuine compassion.

Writing about the incident on her Twitter account Indian Forest (IFS) Officer Susanta Nanda posted a heartfelt message: “For ages, man and animal in India have lived in harmony with unconditional love. In Rajasthan, a lady shows this unfettered love to our wildlife by tying a Rakhi (symbol of love & brotherhood) to an ailing Leopard before handing over to Forest Department.

Internet users have praised the woman in the comment section for giving such wonderful message to people around.

“That is how it should be. We need to coexist with forests and wildlife. God made all types of life and world is not only for human beings,” wrote one user.

Another said, “Tying a rakhi is symbolical…the love and affection is so beautiful…as shown by the lady…and a big applause to all the staff who take care of our forests.”

Raksha Bandhan, one of the most beautiful Hindu festivals, celebrates the bond that is shared between siblings. This year, the festival was celebrated on August 09. The festive date keeps on changing every year- based on astrological alignments.
