A Reddit user who recently moved back to India after living in Canada for 2.5 years has shared a viral post describing his harrowing experience of driving on Indian roads. Used to Canadian norms like yielding to others, stopping at red lights before turning left, following speed limits, and maintaining lanes, he was shocked when applying the same rules in India often drew honks, abuse, and aggression from other drivers, reported hindustantimes.com.

In one incident, he recalled driving with his mother when a scooter rider, without a helmet and wearing earphones, suddenly cut across his path. Despite having his indicator off and driving straight, the rider accused him of not noticing a turn signal supposedly given in advance. “You’re supposed to use your indicator when you actually want to turn, not switch it on 300 meters before and then randomly cut in,” he wrote in frustration.

The Redditor’s post revealed how Indian roads test not rules, but survival instincts, where every journey feels like a gamble

The post painted a stark picture of India’s road realities—blinding high beams, potholes, stray animals, sudden pedestrians, and reckless overtaking—turning streets into battlegrounds of ego, negligence, and chaos.

Reddit users widely resonated with the post, sharing their own bitter experiences and frustrations about Indian driving culture.

One user commented, “Cannot agree more. And don’t forget two-wheelers overtaking from the left without even honking.” Another wrote, “Even two months abroad makes you realize how broken our driving culture is. We just don’t know there’s a better way.” A third added, “When I returned from the UAE, I followed the rules but was abused and honked at. I had to accept that what works internationally doesn’t work here.”

The viral discussion has struck a chord with many, reigniting the debate on road safety, driving etiquette, and the urgent need for stronger enforcement of traffic rules in India.
