“We heard three heartbeats…”
- After years of longing and treatment for PCOD, couple’s dream of parenthood turns into unexpected joy
Dubai-based nurse Vinitha Nagaraj and her husband Karthikeyan Thangavel, both 30 and from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, experienced an unforgettable surprise during a routine pregnancy scan: instead of one heartbeat, they heard three. The couple, married in 2021, had been trying for a child for four years while pursuing careers in Dubai—Vinitha in the ICU and Karthikeyan in the emergency department, reported gulfnews.com.
Following a carefully monitored treatment plan under Dr Anu, including lifestyle adjustments and weight management, Vinitha successfully conceived. During an early scan, the couple first saw two heartbeats, only to discover a third at the subsequent check-up. “It was an emotional and beautiful moment for all of us,” Dr Anu recalled.
The couple’s perseverance and guided treatment led to the safe birth of one boy and two girls, marking a rare and joyous occasion
Triplet pregnancies come with inherent risks such as preterm birth, hypertension, and gestational diabetes. Vinitha was closely monitored throughout, and at 34 weeks, she underwent an emergency C-section. She delivered one boy and two girls—Jeriel, Hannah, and Keziah—each weighing between 1.46 and 1.54 kgs. The babies received specialised care in the NICU under the supervision of Dr Ankit Ranjan and Dr Anto Ferdine Vaik. Two required initial respiratory support, but all three gradually stabilised and were discharged after two to three weeks.
Globally, triplet births are rare, occurring in roughly 1 in 8,000 to 10,000 pregnancies. Dr Anu, with over 18 years of experience and more than 10,000 deliveries, called the case particularly memorable, noting the emotional significance of helping a family dedicated to saving lives. The hospital celebrated the safe arrival of the triplets with staff gathering and congratulations.
For Vinitha and Karthikeyan, the joy extends beyond the hospital. “This country gave us more than we asked for. We built our house back home in India and now have three beautiful children. We feel blessed every single day,” Vinitha said. Karthikeyan added, “There has never been twins or triplets in either of our families. This is a first. We are ready to take on the adventure of raising three children with gratitude and love.”
