Uncontrolled wildfires for the sixth consecutive day on Greece’s Evia Island on Sunday has forced thousands of people to flee their homes in panic. Ferries are standing by for more evacuations by sea.
Agencies report that fires threatening northern suburbs on mainland Athens had died out. But the blaze on Evia, had spread out of control, blazing across thousands of hectares (acres) of pristine forest, through its northern part, forcing the evacuation of dozens of villages.

Over 2,000 people on Evia island have been evacuated by the coastguard in the past week. Others fled their villages on foot overnight, walking along roads dotted with trees in flames.
