Former Indian hockey legend Manuel Frederick, known for his outstanding goalkeeping and humility, passed away at the age of 78. He was part of the Indian men’s hockey team that won the bronze medal at the 1972 Munich Olympics, making him the first person from Kerala to win an Olympic medal, reported timesofindia.indiatimes.com.

Born in Burnassery, Kannur, in 1947, Frederick began his sports journey with the Army’s school team in Bengaluru, where his talent was quickly recognised. He went on to represent several top clubs, including ASC and HAL in Karnataka, Services, Uttar Pradesh, and Mohun Bagan.

A remarkable career between the posts

Frederick’s international career began in 1971, and he went on to serve the national team for seven years. He represented India in two Hockey World Cups — the 1973 edition in the Netherlands, where India bagged a silver medal, and the 1978 tournament in Argentina.

Nicknamed ‘Tiger’ for his fearless reflexes and sharp anticipation, Frederick was particularly known for his penalty stroke saves that often turned matches in India’s favour.

Frederick, hailed as one of India’s finest goalkeepers, inspired generations of players with his courage, discipline, and pioneering role in Indian hockey

Tributes from the hockey fraternity

Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey paid tribute, saying:

“Manuel Frederick was one of India’s finest goalkeepers — a true guardian of the post whose contributions during a glorious period of Indian hockey will always be remembered. His achievements paved the way for many who dreamt of representing India at the highest level. On behalf of Hockey India, I extend my deepest condolences to his family. Indian hockey has lost a great son, but his legacy will forever live on.”

Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh added:

“It is an extremely sad day for the hockey fraternity. Manuel Frederick’s dedication, especially as a pioneer from Kerala, inspired countless youngsters from non-traditional hockey regions to believe in their dreams. His discipline, commitment, and service to the nation will always be honoured.”

Honoured for a lifetime of excellence

In recognition of his immense contribution to the sport, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports honoured Frederick with the Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2019.

His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy as Kerala’s first Olympic medallist and one of India’s most courageous goalkeepers will continue to inspire future generations.
