A 65-year-old woman of Indian origin and a citizen of the United Kingdom was allegedly robbed by two bike-borne men while she was taking a stroll near Maitri Apartment in Mayur Vihar, Delhi. The accused, identified as Rohit Kumar (26) and Mukul Kumar (24), have since been arrested, police said on Monday, reported hindustantimes.com.

Police track accused through 150 CCTV cameras

The complainant told police that the robbers snatched her handbag from behind and fled. The bag contained gold jewellery, ₹50,000 in cash, 300 Pounds, important documents, debit and credit cards, and other personal belongings. Based on her complaint, a case under Sections 304(2) (snatching) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered at Pandav Nagar Police Station.

Additional DCP (East) Vineet Kumar said that more than 150 CCTV cameras were scanned along a 15-kilometre stretch — including metro routes, market lanes, and adjoining areas — to trace the culprits.

Using technical and manual surveillance, the police identified the two suspects, both of whom already had three criminal cases registered against them

Robbers confessed; stolen items recovered

Acting on a tip-off, police laid a trap and apprehended the duo, seizing the motorcycle used in the crime. “Both confessed to their involvement in the snatching-cum-robbery, which led to the recovery of the stolen items,” the officer said.

Recovered items include a gold ring, gold necklace, 135 Pounds, a mobile phone, the woman’s passport, and several documents. Police confirmed that the accused have been active snatchers in East Delhi since 2021.

In a similar case in April 2025, two men were arrested in Delhi for snatching a New Zealand citizen’s bag containing a passport and other valuables.

Despite ongoing crackdowns, street crime continues to plague the capital. According to Delhi Police data, one snatching incident is reported approximately every two hours. However, numbers have declined over the years — from 9,383 cases in 2021 to 6,493 in 2024. Till June 2025, 2,503 cases have been reported.
