A man from Bihar has reportedly been detained at Abu Dhabi International Airport after authorities allegedly found poppy seed-coated sweets in his luggage, prompting his family to seek assistance from Indian diplomatic authorities.

According to reports, Satish Kumar, a resident of Turkban village in Bihar’s Nawada district, travelled to the UAE on July 22 in search of employment. He reportedly flew from Patna via Ahmedabad before arriving in Abu Dhabi, where airport officials stopped him during routine baggage screening.

His family said the sweets, known as Ras Kadam, had been purchased locally before his departure and were coated with poppy seeds, commonly known in India as khus khus. They claim Kumar was unaware that such items could be subject to restrictions under UAE regulations.

  • According to relatives, Kumar remains in custody while authorities examine the case

  • No official confirmation has been issued regarding any charges or legal proceedings.

The incident has caused concern among family members, who have appealed to the Indian Embassy in the UAE for consular assistance and legal support.

Food safety officials in India have noted that poppy seeds are legally used in Indian cuisine and are commonly found in sweets, desserts and traditional dishes. However, experts also emphasise that travellers must comply with the import and customs regulations of their destination country, as laws governing food products and controlled substances vary across jurisdictions.

The case serves as a reminder for international travellers to verify local customs rules before carrying food items, medicines or other products overseas, particularly when travelling to countries with strict import regulations.
