India on Thursday said it is closely tracking developments in Iran amid reports of protests, while emphasising that there is no immediate threat to the safety of Indian nationals in the country. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that it remains in constant touch with relevant authorities and is monitoring the situation as a precautionary measure.
The reassurance came after the Consulate General of Iran in Hyderabad issued a statement asserting that the overall situation in Iran is stable and fully under control. The consulate underlined that there is no cause for concern for Indian citizens living in or travelling to Iran, adding that all necessary steps have been taken to ensure the safety and well-being of foreign nationals, including members of the Indian community.
In its official communication, the Iranian consulate referred to Article 27 of the Iranian Constitution, which guarantees citizens the right to assemble and hold peaceful protests. It said the demonstrations currently being reported are largely driven by economic grievances and represent a legitimate expression of public opinion. According to the statement, Iran’s leadership, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior state officials, has publicly acknowledged the right of citizens to engage in peaceful protest.

The consulate alleged that certain foreign actors were attempting to exploit the situation by politicising the protests and instigating unrest

It claimed that some external parties were making what it described as “purported expressions of sympathy” for the Iranian people while allegedly encouraging violence and instability

The statement also took aim at sections of foreign media, accusing them of running a coordinated propaganda campaign by spreading misinformation. It specifically rejected reports suggesting that Iran’s Supreme Leader was preparing to leave the country, calling such claims false, fabricated and completely without basis. The consulate noted that similar rumours had circulated during recent protests lasting nearly two weeks and were categorically untrue.
Meanwhile, Indian authorities reiterated that they are maintaining a close watch on the situation. The MEA advised Indian nationals in Iran to remain vigilant, stay connected with official channels, and follow advisories issued by the Indian Embassy and consulates. Officials stressed that there is currently no advisory recommending evacuation or travel restrictions, but assured that all necessary steps would be taken should the situation change.
