Over the years, India has supported Fiji in nation-building, particularly through development assistance, technical training, and capacity-building initiatives

Both countries now aim to build on this foundation and explore new areas of cooperation to benefit their people and strengthen their partnership
India and Fiji have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties, with recent high-level meetings focusing on expanding cooperation in key sectors. India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, met Sakiasi Ditoka, Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, in Suva to discuss fresh opportunities for collaboration. Both sides described the talks as warm and constructive, highlighting the long-standing friendship known as the “Veilomani Dosti” partnership.
The discussions centred on priority areas of mutual interest, including development cooperation, trade, and capacity building. There was also interest in exploring potential partnerships in digital infrastructure, reflecting the growing role of technology in national development.
Earlier this week, India’s Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, met Esrom Immanuel, Fiji’s Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development, in New Delhi. Their meeting reviewed the full range of India–Fiji relations and looked at ways to strengthen development projects and training programmes that benefit Fiji’s institutions and workforce
High Commissioner Mehta has also held meetings with other senior Fijian leaders. On February 2, he met Filimone Jitoko, Speaker of Fiji’s Parliament, to discuss closer parliamentary cooperation and broader bilateral engagement. A previous meeting with Fiji’s Finance and Commerce Minister on January 19 also focused on expanding economic and development ties.
India and Fiji share a strong relationship built on mutual respect, cooperation, and deep cultural and people-to-people connections, especially through the Indian diaspora in Fiji. The partnership gained new momentum after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Fiji in November 2014, when the first Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) summit was held.
