India and Nepal have taken another step in strengthening their long-standing friendship with the launch of a new school construction project in Nepal’s far-western Achham district.

The foundation stone for the new building of Shree Basuki Secondary School was laid on Tuesday in Mellekh Rural Municipality-4, Sudurpaschim Province. The project is being funded by the Government of India with financial support of around NPR 38 million.

The ceremony was jointly attended by Narayan Singh, First Secretary at the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, and Jwala Singh Saud, Chairman of Mellekh Rural Municipality.

According to the Indian Embassy, the school building is being developed under India’s High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) scheme. The project will be carried out through the local rural municipality and is expected to improve educational facilities for students and teachers in the area.

Local officials and community representatives welcomed India’s support and said the new infrastructure would create a better learning environment for children in the region

India and Nepal share close cultural, historical and people-to-people ties. Over the years, the two neighbours have worked together on several development projects covering education, health, roads, connectivity and energy.

The school project also reflects India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, which focuses on supporting neighbouring countries through infrastructure and community development initiatives.
