AAP MP Malvinder Singh Kang Urges Protection of NRI Voters in Punjab Electoral Rolls

Observers expect the debate over NRI voting rights and electoral access to remain politically significant ahead of future state and national elections involving high diaspora engagement

Aam Aadmi Party Member of Parliament Malvinder Singh Kang has formally urged India’s Election Commission to introduce special safeguards protecting Non-Resident Indian voters from accidental deletion during electoral roll revision exercises, according to developments reported within the past 24 hours.

Kang, who represents Anandpur Sahib in Punjab, wrote to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar expressing concern that ongoing voter-list revision procedures could unintentionally disenfranchise overseas Punjabis temporarily residing abroad for employment, education, or family reasons. The issue has generated substantial discussion across Indian diaspora communities in Britain, Canada, Australia, and Gulf countries, where large Punjabi-origin populations remain politically connected to Punjab.

In his communication, Kang reportedly proposed several “NRI-friendly mechanisms,” including online verification systems, extended document-submission timelines, embassy-based verification support, and dedicated grievance redressal systems for overseas voters.

Diaspora advocacy organisations welcomed the intervention, arguing that millions of overseas Indians continue contributing economically and socially to India through remittances, philanthropy, and investment while also maintaining strong electoral and family connections

Political analysts noted that Punjab has one of the world’s largest transnational diaspora networks, particularly in Britain and Canada, where overseas Punjabis frequently remain engaged in state-level political debates and electoral developments.

The issue also reflects broader global discussion surrounding absentee voting systems and political participation rights for migrant populations living outside their home countries.

Indian-origin civic groups in London and Birmingham said many overseas families worry about losing voting eligibility because of bureaucratic verification challenges linked to long-term overseas residence.

Election-policy experts observed that several democracies are increasingly modernising overseas voter-management systems through digital verification and embassy-assisted registration procedures.

Kang argued that administrative procedures should not weaken democratic participation among citizens maintaining legitimate long-term ties with India despite overseas residence.
