World Sacred Spirit Festival blends heritage, music and cultural preservation across Nagaur and Jodhpur, with planning already under way for its 2027 edition
The World Sacred Spirit Festival, a long-running cultural event in Rajasthan, is gaining attention as one of India’s lesser-known but distinctive travel experiences. While festivals such as the Pushkar Camel Fair and Jaipur Literature Festival are widely recognised by international visitors, the annual gathering in Nagaur and Jodhpur remains relatively undiscovered among many Australian travellers.
First launched in 2007 at Ahhichatragarh Fort in Nagaur, the festival was created to celebrate the fort’s recognition with a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Excellence in Cultural Heritage Conservation. Organisers say its roots in cultural preservation, rather than tourism, have helped it maintain a strong sense of authenticity.

Under the artistic direction of French curator Alain Weber, who is also associated with Morocco’s renowned Fez Festival of World Sacred Music, the event has evolved into an international showcase of sacred and traditional music

Artists from countries including Iran, Egypt, Spain, Mongolia and India have performed alongside Rajasthani folk musicians, often creating spontaneous cross-cultural collaborations known as “jugalbandi”
Many travel specialists regard the Nagaur segment as the festival’s highlight. Hosted within the historic Ahhichatragarh Fort, the setting offers an intimate atmosphere, with performances taking place in courtyards, terraces and heritage spaces. The festival later moves to the larger and more public-facing venues of Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Fort and Jaswant Thada.
With the 2026 edition having concluded in February, attention is already turning to 2027. Industry experts note that early planning is essential due to limited accommodation and restricted access to some festival areas. February’s favourable weather conditions also make the event an attractive addition to broader Rajasthan itineraries that include Jaipur, Udaipur, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur.
