Germany Ends Airport Transit Visa Requirement for Indian Travellers

New rule allows Indian passengers to transit through German airports without obtaining a separate airport transit visa

Germany has removed the airport transit visa requirement for Indian nationals, making it easier for travellers to connect through the country’s major aviation hubs on their way to international destinations.

The new policy came into effect on 3 June 2026 following its publication in Germany’s Federal Law Gazette. Under the revised rules, Indian passport holders can now transit through German airports without obtaining a Schengen Airport Transit Visa (Type A), provided they are travelling onward to a third country and remain within the international transit area of the airport.

The change applies to major German gateways, including Frankfurt and Munich, which serve as key transit hubs for passengers travelling between India and destinations across Europe, North America and other regions.

Germany’s decision follows a similar measure introduced by France earlier this year, signalling a broader trend towards simplifying transit procedures for Indian travellers passing through European airports

The German Embassy in New Delhi confirmed the policy shift, describing it as a step towards facilitating travel and strengthening ties between Germany and India. Officials said the decision reflects commitments made during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India earlier this year and supports broader efforts to enhance people-to-people exchanges and economic cooperation.

The move is expected to benefit a large number of Indian travellers, particularly students, business travellers and frequent flyers who regularly use German airports for international connections. By removing the transit visa requirement, passengers will save both time and costs associated with visa applications and processing.

However, the exemption applies only to airport transit. Indian citizens intending to enter Germany or travel within the Schengen area will still need the appropriate visa, depending on the purpose and duration of their stay.
