US Premium Visa Interview Pilot Draws Strong Interest from Indian Travellers Facing Appointment Delays

Further operational details, including participating consulates and eligibility conditions, are expected before implementation. Until then, the proposal remains a significant topic of discussion among Indians with family, educational, and business links to the United States

A newly announced U.S. State Department pilot program offering expedited visitor visa interview appointments for an additional fee has emerged as one of the most closely watched developments among Indian travelers and overseas Indian communities. The initiative, expected to begin later this year, would allow eligible B1/B2 visa applicants to pay a premium charge in exchange for significantly faster interview scheduling at participating U.S. diplomatic missions.

The proposal comes amid continuing demand for U.S. visas among Indian business travelers, tourists, and family visitors. Although waiting times have improved compared with pandemic-era backlogs, appointment availability remains a major concern for many applicants. Immigration lawyers and travel advisers serving the Indian diaspora say the program could be particularly attractive to professionals who need to travel at short notice for business meetings, conferences, or family emergencies.

  • The State Department has clarified that the expedited service would affect interview scheduling rather than the visa adjudication process itself

  • Applicants would still undergo the same eligibility review and security screening procedures as all other visa candidates

  • The additional fee would simply provide access to faster appointment slots where available

Indian-American community organizations and travel industry observers are closely monitoring whether U.S. missions in India will be included among participating locations. If implemented there, the program could affect thousands of prospective travelers each year.

The announcement has also sparked debate over the creation of a premium-tier access system for visa applicants. Supporters argue that it provides flexibility and generates resources to improve consular services. Critics contend that faster access should not depend on an applicant’s ability to pay.
