Europe Gains Ground as Indian Students Rethink Overseas Education
Indian students are increasingly considering European countries for higher education as stricter visa policies, rising costs and changing immigration rules reduce the appeal of traditional study destinations.
According to upGrad’s 2024 Study Abroad Trends Report, 48.8% of 25,000 Indian students surveyed identified Europe as their preferred destination. The findings point to a shift away from the US, UK, Canada and Australia, which have long attracted large numbers of Indian students.
Financial pressures and uncertainty over post-study opportunities are among the factors influencing this change. Higher financial requirements and restrictions on dependent visas in some countries have also affected students’ decisions.
Germany, France, Italy, Ireland and Finland are emerging as alternative destinations, offering a combination of affordable education, scholarships, English-taught courses and employment opportunities.

However, visa processing continues to present challenges
France has set a target of attracting 30,000 Indian students by 2030. It has also recorded the highest number of Indian recipients in the latest Erasmus scholarship cohort, with 31 students. Overall, 146 Indians received Erasmus scholarships, while more than 2,000 have benefited from the programme since 2004.
Italy hosts more than 10,000 Indian students, with applications through Uni-Italia reportedly growing by around 10% annually. Visa processing times have also fallen by 40% since 2021, according to the report.
Ireland has seen Indian student numbers rise from approximately 5,000 to more than 8,000. Its English-speaking environment, university rankings and post-study work opportunities are helping drive interest.
With more than 40% of applicants reportedly coming from middle-class backgrounds and relying on education loans, affordability remains a central consideration. Europe’s expanding education and employment options could further strengthen its position among Indian students.
