Subheading: Revised charges take effect from 1 July as Australia tightens its international education framework
Australia has increased the application fee for its Student Visa (Subclass 500) by 25 per cent, making it more expensive for international students, including thousands of Indians, to pursue higher education in the country.
The revised fee came into effect on 1 July 2026, with the cost rising from AUD 2,000 to AUD 2,500. The increase is expected to add to the overall financial burden on students already facing rising tuition fees and living expenses.
The latest revision follows a series of increases in recent years as the Australian government continues to reform its migration and international education policies. Australia remains one of the world’s leading destinations for overseas students, with India among its largest source countries.
Alongside the higher student visa fee, Australia has also raised the application charge for the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) from AUD 4,600 to AUD 5,750. In addition, a separate visa fee of AUD 2,050 has been introduced for applicants enrolling in English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS), replacing the earlier standard fee structure for these programmes.

The changes form part of broader efforts by the Australian government to manage migration levels and maintain what it describes as a sustainable international education system

The government has also indicated that the annual cap on new international student commencements will remain at 295,000 for 2027
Education sector representatives have expressed concern that repeated fee increases could affect Australia’s competitiveness in attracting overseas students. They argue that higher visa costs, combined with stricter migration measures, may encourage prospective applicants to consider alternative study destinations.
For Indian students planning to study in Australia, education advisers recommend factoring the revised visa charges into overall budgeting before submitting applications.
