Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to raise concerns over delays in Australian student visa processing during his upcoming visit to Australia, as India seeks to safeguard educational opportunities for its students.

The issue is expected to feature in discussions between Prime Minister Modi and his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, during the Prime Minister’s visit as part of a three-nation tour covering Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand from July 6 to 11. The visit is aimed at strengthening India’s engagement with key Indo-Pacific partners across trade, education, security and people-to-people ties.

Speaking ahead of the visit, Ministry of External Affairs Joint Secretary (Indo-Pacific) Vishwesh Negi said Australia continues to be one of the most preferred destinations for Indian students despite recent concerns over visa processing.

Negi said the Indian government is aware of delays affecting student visa applications and other admission-related procedures. He added that New Delhi remains in regular contact with Australian authorities to ensure that genuine students and skilled professionals are not face unnecessary obstacles while pursuing education and career opportunities in Australia.

The remarks come amid growing concern among prospective Indian students over longer visa processing times following changes introduced by Australia to strengthen its international student programme. Indian officials have stressed that while both countries recognise the need for robust immigration systems, legitimate applicants should continue to enjoy smooth access to educational opportunities.

  • Education remains one of the strongest pillars of the India-Australia relationship, with thousands of Indian students enrolling in Australian universities each year

  • Both governments have consistently highlighted academic exchanges, research collaboration and skilled mobility as important components of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

The upcoming talks are expected to explore ways to improve visa processing, enhance educational cooperation and further strengthen people-to-people links between the two countries, while reinforcing broader bilateral ties.
