Germany’s outgoing Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, has described Indian migration as a major success story, saying Indian professionals have integrated exceptionally well into Germany’s labour market and are making a significant contribution to the country’s economy.

Speaking during an interaction with The Indian Express before completing his four-year tenure in New Delhi, Ackermann said Germany’s growing demand for skilled workers has reinforced the importance of legal migration pathways for qualified professionals from countries such as India.

  • He noted that Germany is facing demographic challenges, including a shrinking and ageing population, creating an urgent need for engineers, nurses, caregivers, apprentices and skilled tradespeople

  • According to Ackermann, the German government recognises that attracting international talent is essential to sustaining the country’s workforce and economic growth

The ambassador said he had been particularly impressed by how Indian students and professionals had successfully integrated into German society after completing their education. He added that Indian migrants have earned a strong reputation in sectors ranging from healthcare and engineering to technology and manufacturing.

However, Ackermann emphasised that proficiency in the German language remains vital for long-term success, especially outside major cities such as Berlin, where English is less widely used in everyday life. He said language skills are crucial for professional advancement and social integration.

Reflecting on India-Germany relations, Ackermann said bilateral ties have expanded considerably in recent years, with cooperation extending beyond trade into areas such as defence, mobility and skilled migration. He described the growing strategic partnership as one that has benefited both countries despite an increasingly uncertain global environment.

His remarks come as Germany continues to position itself as an attractive destination for skilled Indian workers and students through legal migration channels, amid rising demand for qualified professionals across key sectors and closer economic cooperation between India and Europe.
