Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), particularly those based in the Gulf, are increasingly broadening their investment portfolios beyond real estate, with growing allocations to global equities, private markets, fixed-income products and other financial assets, according to wealth management experts.

For decades, property and family-owned businesses formed the backbone of wealth creation for many overseas Indians. However, changing investment preferences, especially among younger generations, are driving demand for more liquid and globally diversified assets that can be managed across multiple countries and currencies.

  • Industry executives say wealthy NRI investors are showing greater interest in global equities, private equity, venture capital, private credit and structured investment products as they seek broader diversification and long-term returns

  • Fixed-income investments have also become more attractive for investors looking to generate stable income while reducing portfolio volatility

  • Digital assets are attracting selective interest but continue to represent only a small portion of overall portfolios

Despite the shift towards international diversification, India continues to occupy a central place in NRI investment strategies. Experts note that overseas Indian families remain optimistic about the country’s long-term economic prospects, entrepreneurial ecosystem and expanding capital markets. Investment options have also widened through Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs), private market opportunities and new structures available via Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City).

The trend reflects a broader evolution in wealth management rather than a reaction to short-term market movements. Alongside investment diversification, affluent NRI families are placing greater emphasis on succession planning, trusts, family governance and cross-border wealth structuring as they prepare to transfer assets across generations.

Analysts say the changing approach highlights a maturing investment outlook among overseas Indians, balancing international opportunities with continued confidence in India’s long-term growth story while adopting more sophisticated wealth management strategies.
