An Indian-origin couple in the United Kingdom has been convicted of orchestrating a multimillion-pound fraud scheme that exploited the urgent demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) during the Covid-19 pandemic, with prosecutors saying the proceeds financed an extravagant lifestyle.
The case centred on fraudulent PPE supply agreements made at the height of the global health emergency, when governments and businesses were racing to secure protective equipment. Investigators said the couple falsely claimed they could source large quantities of PPE, collected substantial payments from victims and failed to deliver the promised goods.
According to evidence presented in court, the illicit gains were used to purchase luxury assets, including a Porsche worth around £126,000, Rolex watches and extensive improvements to their home. Financial investigators also traced significant personal spending funded through the fraud.
