Bharath Kumar Kuthati, a 2006-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, has been appointed as India’s next High Commissioner to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, according to an announcement reported on September 16. He is currently serving as India’s High Commissioner to Botswana.

Kuthati’s appointment comes as India and Trinidad and Tobago continue to develop diplomatic, cultural and economic relations. He will succeed Dr Pradeep Singh Rajpurohit, who is completing his assignment as India’s High Commissioner to the Caribbean nation.

Diplomatic experience

  • The Ministry of External Affairs appointed Kuthati as High Commissioner to Botswana on May 11, 2023

  • His diplomatic career has included assignments at the ministry’s headquarters and Indian missions abroad, according to the appointment report

His new posting will place him at the centre of India’s engagement with Trinidad and Tobago, a country with longstanding historical and cultural links to India. The two nations established diplomatic relations in 1962.

 Outgoing envoy concludes assignment

Rajpurohit’s departure follows a series of farewell engagements in Trinidad and Tobago. On September 8, he paid a farewell courtesy call on President Christine Carla Kangaloo. The country’s Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs also recorded a farewell meeting with the outgoing Indian High Commissioner.

During his tenure, Rajpurohit contributed to cooperation in education, healthcare, technology, culture and development. He is due to take up a new diplomatic assignment as India’s Ambassador to Bahrain.

Kuthati’s appointment comes against the backdrop of continued efforts to expand India–Trinidad and Tobago cooperation. Recent discussions between the two countries have included skills development, technical education and broader economic engagement.

The appointment marks the next phase of India’s diplomatic representation in Trinidad and Tobago, with the incoming High Commissioner expected to take charge following the completion of the necessary formalities.
