India and Australia explore new avenues for deeper space cooperation

High-level talks in Adelaide come as both countries seek to expand collaboration across space technology, research and industry

India and Australia have discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in the space sector, as the two countries look to build on their growing strategic and technological partnership.

India’s High Commissioner to Australia, Nagesh Singh, met Australian Space Agency head Dr Enrico Palermo at Lot Fourteen, an innovation and technology precinct in Adelaide. The officials exchanged views on developments in the space sectors of both countries and discussed potential areas for closer collaboration.

  • The talks covered the wider space ecosystems in India and Australia, including opportunities to deepen links between government agencies, research institutions and industry

  • No new agreement or specific initiative was announced following the meeting

The discussions come shortly after Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Anthony Albanese reaffirmed the importance of stronger space cooperation at the third India-Australia Annual Summit in Melbourne in July. The leaders specifically highlighted industry-to-industry partnerships and welcomed continued Australian support for India’s Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme.

Australia is supporting Gaganyaan through space-tracking expertise, including a temporary tracking terminal on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. The two governments have also expressed support for closer collaboration between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Australian Space Agency.

Commercial links are also gaining momentum. A 12-member Australian space industry delegation recently attended Bengaluru Space Expo 2026 to explore partnerships with Indian companies across areas including launch services, Earth observation, advanced manufacturing, space research and communications.

Australia’s space agency says India is an enduring partner, with cooperation spanning advanced manufacturing, space exploration, artificial intelligence, cyber security and space situational awareness.

The latest Adelaide meeting signals continued efforts to translate the broader strategic relationship into practical cooperation across an expanding space industry.
