Sandra Mason elected by a two-thirds vote in Barbados to replace UK Queen as head of state

Barbados is a former British colony. Though it gained independence in 1966, it continued with its ties with UK’s monarchy. The current move will pave the way for the country to become a republic on November 30, the country’s 55th anniversary of independence from Britain

The Barbados government has decided to drop Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state next year, according to Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, thus taking a major step towards shedding its colonial past.

Sandra Mason was elected by a two-thirds vote of a joint session of the country’s House of Assembly and Senate.

Mason had been made a Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George, at Buckingham Palace on March 23, 2018 in London, the first woman to serve on the Barbados Court of Appeals.

Mottley, however, reiterated the collective wish, that Barbados should continue nurturing its relationship with the British monarch
