The Uttarakhand high court issued notices to the state as well as the central government’s MoEF&CC (the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change) for their inability to prepare the tourism development plan, master plan and the land use plan in accordance with the Doon Valley Notification of 1989 even after almost 32 years.
The bench of Acting Chief Justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra and Justice Alok Kumar Verma also issued notices to the state tourism and environment departments, state pollution control board, Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority and Haridwar- Roorkee Development Authority in the case. The bench said that the matter was crucial as the Himalayas were vital to the country. The court granted them eight weeks to file their responses, reported ET.
The petition added that carrying on construction work without a tourism plan would lead to ill consequences like — unregulated and uncontrolled tourism, air and water pollution, depletion of water resources, unregulated vehicular movements and deforestation
The order came when the court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation petition, filed by Dehradun-resident Akash Vashist, who is an environmentalist and lawyer. The PIL said that construction work was ongoing in the Doon Valley without a master plan.
The petition added that carrying on construction work without a tourism plan would lead to ill consequences like — unregulated and uncontrolled tourism, air and water pollution, depletion of water resources, unregulated vehicular movements and deforestation.
