As the 2024 Lok Sabha elections loom ahead, the Election Commission of India has extended a warm invitation to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) to exercise their voting rights. The electoral process, spanning from April 19th and unfolding over seven phases across 44 days, beckons NRIs to participate actively. Gone are the days when NRIs were sidelined from the voting process; now, they hold a pivotal role in shaping the democratic landscape of India
Here’s a comprehensive guide on how NRIs can cast their votes in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha Elections:
Step 1: Filling out Form 6A
Access the Voters’ Service Portal: NRIs need to navigate to the “Forms” section on the Voters’ Service Portal and locate the option for “New registration for overseas (NRI) electors.”
Complete Form 6A Online: Click on the “Fill Form 6A” option and furnish the required details. Ensure to upload self-attested photocopies of essential documents, including your passport, Indian address proof, valid visa endorsement, and a recent passport-sized color photograph.
Step 2: Submitting Form 6A
Submission Methods: Once the form is duly filled, NRIs can submit it either in person or via mail. If opting for the latter, remember to enclose self-attested photocopies of the documents mentioned earlier.
In-person Submission: For those preferring a personal touch, visit the Electoral Registration Officer or Assistant ERO of your constituency. Bring along your original passport for verification.
By following these steps diligently, NRIs can make their voices heard and play a vital role in shaping the nation’s future
Step 3: Post-Submission Process
Verification Process: Booth-level officials will conduct address verification based on the information provided in the passport. Should there be any discrepancies, NRIs can rectify them by filling out and submitting Form 8.
Notification of Decision: Following verification, the Election Registration Officer will communicate the decision via post to the provided address and through SMS to the registered phone number. Note that NRIs will not receive an Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC).
Step 4: Casting the Vote
On Election Day, NRIs can exercise their franchise by presenting their original passport at the designated polling station. This personal appearance ensures the integrity of the voting process and upholds the democratic ethos.
The 2024 Lok Sabha Elections mark a significant milestone in inclusivity, empowering NRIs to contribute to India’s democratic fabric regardless of geographical boundaries. By following these steps diligently, NRIs can make their voices heard and play a vital role in shaping the nation’s future.
