Afghan community in India urges MEA for more consular support

The Afghan community in India emphasizes that increased consular staff and expanded resources are crucial to addressing their daily concerns and safeguarding their access to essential services, including education, health, and residency documentation

The Afghan community in India is calling for increased consular support and assistance from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as they face mounting administrative and welfare challenges, business-standard.com reported.

Currently, a single former Afghan diplomat, who has remained in India since the Taliban’s takeover, has managed to keep the Afghan Mission and its consulates operational with limited resources.

  • Despite the strained circumstances, India has continued supporting Afghan students through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarship program

  • Since August 2021, the ICCR has facilitated admissions for over 3,000 Afghan students, including 600 female students, underscoring India’s commitment to educational empowerment for Afghan youth even in turbulent times

The return of the embassy’s Indian personnel from Kabul following the Taliban’s ascent to power has left a gap in services for Afghan nationals residing in India. Although an Indian technical team has been stationed at the Afghan Embassy in New Delhi since June 2022, their focus remains on humanitarian aid rather than direct consular services. This setup reflects India’s cautious diplomatic stance, which mirrors the international community’s approach regarding the recognition of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
