A man from Amritsar lost his life in Guatemala while attempting to enter the US illegally through the ‘dunki’ route. His tragic journey sheds light on the risks of illegal immigration, reported gujaratsamachar.com.

Gurpreet Singh’s Costly Journey

As per reports, Gurpreet Singh, 33, had paid an agent in Chandigarh to facilitate his travel to Guyana. From there, he paid a Pakistani agent to continue his journey to the US. In total, Singh reportedly spent ₹36 lakh in his desperate attempt to cross borders.

Punjab Minister Warns Against Illegal Immigration

Punjab Minister of NRI Affairs, Kuldeep Dhaliwal of AAP, visited Singh’s village and addressed the issue. On social media, he posted, “A young boy who was going to America by donkey route after investing ₹36 lakh in Ramdas town of Ajnala assembly constituency died on the way.”

“I request all Punjabis not to go to any country illegally and if you have collected so much money by taking loans then start a business here in Punjab, Mann government will fully help you,” urged Dhaliwal.

Family Appeals for Repatriation of Body

Singh’s grieving family has reached out to the Indian government, seeking assistance in bringing his body back to India for the final rites. Their plea highlights the struggles and suffering that families endure when loved ones take dangerous migration routes.

South America: A Gateway for Illegal Immigration

Countries like Brazil and Guyana have become hotspots for the ‘dunki’ route, with many migrants embarking on dangerous journeys on foot to fulfill their American dream.

From South America, illegal immigrants move into Central American nations like Nicaragua and Guatemala before heading toward Mexico.

The ultimate goal remains crossing the US-Mexico border illegally in search of a better future.
